Nassau Community College's Design Students Create Bras To Promote Breast Cancer Awareness
In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Nassau Community College’s apparel design students created original works of art;
"Bras To Promote Breast Cancer Awareness".
The student designed unique and fully stylized bra creations such as “Break the Chains of Breast Cancer” designed by Sivan Yaniv, “ Rock for the Cure” designed by Kris D’Amico and “Rainbow of Courage” designed by Brittney Garren. In keeping with the message of breast cancer awareness, the bras featured ornate elements to highlight serious themes including “Hold on for Hope” designed by Caitlin Bensen and “Missing You” designed by Dawn Seddio in honor of her Mom.
This project was introduced when the students were inspired to create Bras for Breast Cancer by my journey when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The students really got into the project and designed some amazing creations. The first year over $750 was raised through the student’s efforts.
The Bras were also exhibited at a special event called “Fashion Fights Breast Cancer”, held during Club Hour in the CCB. An art gallery setting is the perfect way to emphasize the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness and at the same time exhibit the students fashion art for this cause. Four of the students raffled their designs to benefit Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the NCC Design Innovator’s Scholarship Fund with each raffle bra teamed with a gift certificate to a restaurant or salon. “Reflection” Designed by, Catherine Kuehn includes a gift certificate to Starr Boggs Restaurant in West Hampton Beach, “Don’t Gamble with your Health” Designed by, Victoria D’Aprile has a gift certificates to Maxwell & Dunne's in Plainview, Make Me Stronger” Designed by, Alicia Ferrara has a Gift Certificate to Maine Made Inn and “Out of the Storm and into the Sun” includes a gift certificate to City Café. A gift basket raffle, with the proceeds going to Making strides Against Breast Cancer.
