Dr. Prabhakar, Professor of Biology, at Nassau Community College earned Ph.D. from Delhi University, India, in Histochemistry and Ultrastructure of Crucifers. Her dissertation was published in several international journals, and she served as a Research Associate and Lecturer of Botany in Delhi University prior to joining Nassau Community College. The courses she teaches now include biology for majors, non-majors, botany, ecology, molecules and medicines, human genetics, and has also engaged students in three independent studies related to ethnobotany. Her contributions include designing two new courses, BIO 124/Plants & Society and BIO 130/Molecules & Medicines at the College, in addition to being course coordinator for BIO 103/Ecology Course and BIO 110/General Biology. She also served as course Co-coordinator for BIO 102/Introduction to College Biology II.
At Nassau Community College, she has served as chair of SUNY General Education Assessment Committee for Natural Sciences, Critical Thinking Assessment Coordinator, a member of Planning Committee, Vice-President for Academic Affairs Search Committee, and advisor to the Botany Club in addition to several other departmental and college-wide committees. She has conducted many workshops pertinent to teaching botany to non-majors, outcomes assessment, active learning, differentiated instruction, learning communities, modifying curriculum with technology, and integrating botany in liberal arts curriculum. Dr. Prabhakar has enriched her knowledge of innovative tools and techniques by participating in Molecules of Life grant at NYU, attending numerous workshops at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and recently by attending webinars on SEA Phages sponsored by Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
In addition, she serves on the executive board of Phytomorphology (an international journal of plant morphology), the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists, Past President and Vice-President of Alpha Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and as a foreign representative at the All India Women’s Education Fund Association.
Dr. Prabhakar is a recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002, NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award 2007, SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Faculty Service in 2010. and Lifetime Achievement Award 2017 from Marquis following multiple inclusions in Who’s Who in America.
